When I first spotted the wheeling machine in my highschool art room, I didn't know what it is.  When I realised it's for wheeling pottery, I was not allowed to use since I was not an Art student.

In 2003, I enrolled in a wheeling course as a hobby and started my first encounter with clay and pottery.

Some of my non-wheeling pottery products - chopstick holders.

The clay used for wheeling is not the usual clay we picked from the beach or elsewhere.  They are refined with special processes and were imported.  Normally it takes about 3 months for those clays to be shipped from UK to HK.

Actually it's easy to try wheeling, even people who have no experience or non-artistic (like myself) could shape something quite nice for the first few attempts. Of course if the instructor is nice and patience, the products would be much nicer and students would develop an interest towards this hobby.

Since I found it interesting, I enrolled in another course although they are making similar products :

Few steps from wheeling to finished products :

1. After shaping, leave it to completely dry for first burning (a few days), then carved the pattern on the dried item.

2.  After first burning, it will changed its colour.

3. For entry level, colouring is very easy, just simply dipped the whole item into the liquid colour then drained and it will be ready for final burning.
(sometimes we will dip in a special liquid to give the finished product a glossy appearance)

Special thanks to my wheeling instructors : Mr Law Hon Wah (陶瓷藝術家羅漢華先生), Mrs Annie Law and Tony.

When I was visiting my friends in Tokyo, it happened that the couple have been attending pottery courses for the past 3 years.  So one of my itinerary in Tokyo was to attend a pottery trial class.

Different colour smaples at the Tokyo Pottery School,  and my University friend, Tomoko and her husband, Masato.

The clay used in Japan is different from those I used in Hong Kong, they incorporated iron in the clay so even I only in single colour dip, the finished products look more special than those I made in Hong Kong.

That's Y I said "the instructor is very important" Mr Law is a very nice instructor.

Too bad I left his namecard in HK. Try to find his pottery workshop in Central and attend his course.  U will be able to wheel out something satisfactory :)

Poo can wheel, so can U!

They are lovely! I have no talent in making 3D artistic things, what a pity. The wheeling thing reminds me of the film "Ghost".
